Back Pain and Chiropractic Care

Back Pain – Will I Just Have to Live With It?

Absolutely not! Chiropractic care is the most effective and cost efficient way of dealing with back pain.  At Lowrey Chiropractic we help many of our patients in the Folsom and El Dorado Hills area that suffer from back pain with the latest treatments in chiropractic care and soft tissue therapy.  Chiropractors look to the cause of back pain and dysfunction, rather than covering up the symptoms that accompany it. Millions of people suffer from back pain in the United States.According to the National Institutes of Health, 70 to 85% of people will experience back pain in their lives. That is an alarming statistic! However, with chiropractic care, back pain can almost always be eliminated or managed so that you do not have to live in pain day in and day out.

What Causes Back Pain?

There are a number of things that can cause back pain including:

  • Bad posture
  • Subluxations
  • Herniated disc
  • Repetitive stress, such as sitting at a computer desk all day without taking breaks to get up and walk around
  • Improper lifting techniques
  • Twisting while lifting
  • Carrying objects far from the center of your body
  • Lack of exercise
  • Trauma
  • Auto collisions
  • Spinal degeneration
  • Obesity
  • Infection
  • Muscle tightness

These are just a few causes of back pain and your chiropractor will be able to determine through a very thorough history and exam why you may be suffering from it. Your body is resilient and especially your spine, but when you constantly put strain on it, it starts to wear down. Think of your spinal discs as radial tires. The fibers in your discs interlock in a way that there is a lot of strength and flexibility in them. However, when you use improper lifting techniques over and over again, you start to get micro tears in the outer layers of the disc. You may not be aware of this yet because there is no pain sensation in this part of the disc. If this continues to happen, the micro tears can proceed all the way to the center of the disc, which is where the nucleus pulposus sits. When this spills out onto the surrounding nerves and tissues, you can have searing, incapacitating pain, resulting in a disc herniation.

How Can My Chiropractor Help?

Chiropractors are very skilled at locating subluxations, which are misalignments of the spine, causing stress on the nervous system and resulting in miscommunication between the brain and the rest of the body. Subluxations can also cause muscle tension, immobilization, swelling, pain, and dysfunction in your back. By removing these subluxations, pain and swelling is reduced and motion is restored, allowing the body to function at its highest capacity.

What Can I Do to Prevent Back Pain?

  • Get checked by your chiropractor regularly to correct subluxations before they turn into symptoms
  • When lifting, bend your knees, keep the arch in your low back, and pick up the object as close to your body as possible
  • Manage your weight
  • Strengthen your core muscles
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain good posture
  • Practice good ergonomics at your workplace
